How to Hand-Rear Baby Birds Safely
Education before commitment.
Long-term welfare always comes first.
Hand-rearing baby birds is a significant responsibility that shapes a bird’s confidence, behaviour, and ability to settle into a home for life. This page is designed to help you understand what hand-rearing truly involves, so informed, thoughtful decisions can be made with the bird’s best interests at heart.
PHILOSOPHY & CREDIBILITY
Our Approach to Hand-Rearing
At Birdtalk, hand-rearing is not about producing birds for sale. It is about preparing birds and people for a lifetime together. We focus on calm handling, appropriate boundaries, and gradual development so birds grow into confident, emotionally balanced companions.
We believe education is essential. When people understand bird behaviour, communication, and needs from the beginning, long-term outcomes improve significantly for both the bird and the household.

WHATS INVOLVED
What Hand-Rearing Really Involves
Hand-rearing requires time, consistency, patience, and a willingness to learn. Feeding schedules, temperature control, hygiene, and daily routines all play a role in healthy development. It is not a short-term commitment, and it does not suit every lifestyle. This is a bonding time. If you are placed wth a bird taking over hand feeding your bird once or twice a day after they are weaned (eating independently pellets, seed or fruit and vegetables- a suitable diet for you bird), its a perfect time to bond with them. They love a comfort feed in the morning or evening or both until they no longer want it.
Behaviour, Bonding, and Training
Early experiences influence how a bird responds to people, change, and training later in life. Learning to read bird body language, respond appropriately to behaviour, and provide structure helps build trust and reduces future stress or behavioural challenges.
Why Education Matters
Many rehoming situations occur because expectations were unclear or preparation was lacking. Education helps prevent this. Understanding what life with a bird truly involves creates calmer homes, stronger bonds, and better long-term welfare outcomes.
Every bird is an individual, and no two situations are the same. Hand-rearing involves variables that can’t always be predicted, which is why we prioritise education, preparation, and suitability over outcomes alone.
PLACEMENT PHILOSOPHY
How We Approach Placement
Not every home suits every bird. We always try to prioritise what is best for the bird and their potential owners, even if that means advising against a particular match.
Before discussing suitability, we take time to understand lifestyle, experience, expectations, and preparation. Our goal is to ensure birds are placed into homes where they are understood, supported, and valued long-term.
Us Help You Decide
Considering a Hand-Reared Bird?
If, after learning more, you would like to discuss whether a bird may suit your home and circumstances, you’re welcome to contact us. We are always happy to talk through preparation, timing, and suitability before any decisions are made.
REASSURANCE
A Thoughtful, Welfare-First Process
We do not believe birds are suitable for every household, and we are comfortable explaining to you when it is not the right fit. Our focus is long-term welfare, not volume, and we value honest conversations that support the best outcome for everyone involved.
